Schip – Ship

Let’s start with the basics. The word “schip” is Dutch for “ship.” You’ll hear this term frequently in various contexts, whether you’re discussing vessel operations or maritime logistics.

 

Haven – Port

Haven” refers to a “port” or “harbor”, a crucial term in any maritime conversation. Ports are the gateways for international trade, and knowing this term will help you navigate discussions about logistics, dock management, and port facilities.

Lading – Cargo

“Lading” is the Dutch word for “cargo”. The goods or merchandise transported by the ship. Understanding this term is essential for discussions about shipping logistics and cargo handling.

Schipper – Skipper/Captain

The word “schipper” refers to the “captain” or “skipper” of a vessel.

Kade – Quay

“Kade” refers to a “quay”, where ships are loaded, unloaded, or moored. This term is especially useful when discussing port operations. 

Vracht – Freight

“Vracht” means “freight”. A critical term in the maritime, especially when you’re dealing with shipping costs or discussing the type of goods being transported. For example: “De vrachtkosten zijn gestegen.” translates to “The freight costs have increased.”

Scheepsvaart – Shipping

“Scheepsvaart” refers to shipping or the shipping industry. It encompasses all activities related to the transport of goods and passengers by sea. 

Scheepswerf – Shipyard

A “scheepswerf” is a “shipyard”. If you’re involved in shipbuilding or repairs, this word will be part of your everyday vocabulary. 

Rederij – Shipping Company

“Rederij” is the term for a “shipping company”, the organization responsible for operating and managing ships.
